The main purpose here is to teach students to write acceptable English and to develop the fluent use of active vocabulary. Accordingly the vocabulary load is relatively light and the emphasis in the texts is on words commonly used and confused rather than on passive lexical items. Each chapter contains a text in which a main structural item and some secondary items are presented and intensively used. Exercises consist of multiple-choice questions on comprehension and lexical items; pattern exercises in which the student must imitate structures exemplified in the text, using alternative words and phrases supplied (a new approach at this level of structural difficulty); exercises in the secondary items aimed at increasing knowledge of phrasal verbs and prepositions; exercises on pronunciation; short progress tests on material presented in the chapter.
