FINNISH FOR FOREIGNERS
was written to help the ever-growing number of foreign people — students, teachers, diplomats, or just ordinary visitors — who find themselves staying in Finland for shorter or longer periods of time and want to learn Finnish. The author has many years' experience in teaching Finnish to English-speaking people. She is familiar with their special problems in studying Finnish and knows how to do away with many of so-called »difficulties» of this language.
The textbook begins with easy and practical things, stressing the words and forms of spoken language used in every-day situations met by every foreigner: finding one's way, shopping, taking buses and streetcars, finding lodgings, going to parties or to the sauna etc. Somewhat later the learner is also gradually introduced to things characteristic of literary Finnish and will thus be able to start reading Finnish newspapers and literature.

Most lessons are in the form of a lively dialogue, followed by simple grammatical explanations avoiding unnecessary learned terminology, a reader section, and numerous useful exercises and drills. The idiomatic English translation added to the basic dialogues in meant to quicken the pace of learning and to help those studying Finnish without a teacher.
