Roland, Director of Studies in General Practice, University of Cambridge This successful series of books for practising GPs, GP trainees, and clinical medical students provides guides to important areas of the GP's work. Other members of the primary health care team, as well as community physicians, occupational health physicians, and health education ofticers will alsó find these books useful. About this book The subject of this book is 'ordinary' families with problems, rather than 'problem families'. Many unhappy families-coping with illness, loss, major problems, or change-turn to generál practitioners for help and support. Their problems are not always presented overtíy and their detection requires both skill and intuition. Knowledge of families improves the medical care of individuals. This knowledge is often limited and anecdotal. Ways of improving the recognition, understanding, and management of family disorder are badly needed. By developing listening skills, inviting the whole family to participate in problem-solving, and by actively participating in the family system as it operates in the consulting room, a generál practitioner can assist in bringing about change. In particular, family members can be shown they do possess the power to choose between alternatives when they themselves feel trapped. As well as improving their recognition of family problems, GPs need better methods of understanding and working with families that can be used in their everyday work. In this book the author selects ideas and methods írom family and marital therapy and applies them to generál practice. Vissza
