Lost of us have, in some comer of our minds, cherished memories of ciuldhcod by the sea. We recall certain smells, colors, feelings, but also very precise details about die houses that sheltered those happy times, houses where life was ordered by the imperatives of the sun and the sea—^where we experienced moments of unique freedom and pleasure.
Family Houses by the Sea is an homage to summer by the ocean—the casual, relaxed way of life, the iamily traditions, many of them going bacic for generations. With more than 250 exquisite photographs, Family Houses by the Sea explores twenty-one homes along the coasts of the United States, France, Engjand, and Scandinavia. Houses range from a rustic shingled cottage in Maine to a sleek modem house in MaUbu—a gracious vdla on Cap Ferrât to a family manor house on the Baltic Sea. None of these homes has been professionally decorated; rather, decor has evolved through the needs and taste of each individual family.
No interior detail has escaped the eye of Jérôme Darblay, whose photographs reveal sun porches with wicker rocking chairs, sun-fiUed summer kitchens in a state of epicurean disarray, comfortably cluttered bedrooms, living rooms foil of shells and ship models, rooms to house billiard and Ping-Pong tables, boating sheds, and shady patios with ocean views.
Alexandra d'Amoux, through her evocative text interspersed with anecdotes told by the occupants themselves, re-creates the casual, affectionate atmosphere of these houses where parents, friends, children, and relatives gather for summer vacations.
