Preface
There are many reasons for taking an interest in the Fédéral Republic of Germany. Many people see it first and foremost as a modern, efficient industrial country whose products are spread throughout the world. Others tend to associate it more with the great German traditions in the arts and sciences. Still more have in mind the country attracting the tourist, with its green rolling hills and romantic old towns. Those interested in politics will be aware that there is still an unsolved "German question" and will want to know its ori-gins. And those convinced of the importance of social questions will want to learn about the major transformations which the Fédéral Republic of Germany has undergone in recent decades. And then there will be those who simply want to know more about the country from which the Germans, whom one meets the world over as tourists, technicians or businessmen, come.
This book is designed to help all those who, for whatever reasons, seek information about the Fédéral Republic of Germany. In 69 short chapters it deals with the country's geography and demogra-phy, its history, the political system and practical politics, the econ-omy with all its branches, the social structure and the cultural life. We have tried to assemble as much reliable information as possible in a limited space in order to help the reader broaden his knowledge and understanding of the country. In doing this, however, it was also necessary to include some statistical information though this has, whenever possible, been presented in a graphie form to ease compréhension. Although we would, of course, be pleased if the reader were to be enticed from time to time to read on, each chap-ter is self-contained but as some subjects are treated under var-ious aspects in several chapters, it is advisable to refer to the index when seeking particular information as cross references are only occasionally given.
Readers may also wish to direct an inquiry to an organisation or office in the Fédéral Republic. For this purpose, addresses of associations, institutions and authorities are given at the end of relevant chapters. Vissza
