Reading and Thinking in English is a series of four books forming a course in reading comprehension fór students of English as a foreign language. It prepares the student fór the speciálist English met in textbooks, reports, journals etc. The subject-matter is varied, so that the student becomes accustomed to reading and thinking about specialized subject-matter, without being biased towards any one subject. The complete series takes the student from a basic level of English to a level at which authentic, unsimplified texts can be understood. The course is graded bút has been designed to allow fór entry at any stage. The four books in the series are: (near beginner) (pre-intermediate) (intermediate) (advanced) There are Teacher's Editions to accompany each of the four books. These provide a detailed teacher's guide, notes on the units, and keys to the exercises. Students working on their own should use the Teacher's Edition since it alsó contains a self-study guide. Exploring functions is divided intő eight units. The first is an introduction to the approach followed in the book. Units 2-8 then deal with certain communicative functions which are common in acaaemic writing; fór example, instructions, describing how things work, generalizing and exemplifying, comparing, and explaining. The units show how these functions are expressed in English and give the student opportunities to develop the reading strategies introduced in Unit 1. Vissza
