QUANTUM MECHANICS
By F. Mandl, M.A., D.PhiL, Atomic Energy Research
Establishment, Harwell.
A book for experiment research workers, giving a thorough grasp of quantum mechanics without demanding a previous high standard of mathematical knowledge. Apart from classical physics, calculus and vector analysis, the reader is assumed to be familiar with the qualitative concepts of quantum theory, such as the wave nature of matter, and their experimental basis. The knowledge pre-supposed on the part of the reader has been kept to a minimum. Price 35s.
VALENCY AND MOLECULAR STRUCTURE
By E. Cartmell, B.Sc., and G. W. A. Fowles, B.Sc., Ph.D.,
University of Southampton.
This book is written by chemists for chemists, and will fill the need for an introductory text in which an elementary account of the development of the quantum theory is combined with a survey of its application to structural chemistry. It is mainly intended for first-year honours students, although Part III, which...

This book is written by chemists for chemists, and will fill the need for an introductory text in which an elementary account of the development of the quantum theory is combined with a survey of its application to structural chemistry. It is mainly intended for first-year honours students, although Part III, which discusses recent work on the nature of the bonds in many molecules, is more suitable for advanced courses.
Price 32s. 6d.
LIGHT-SCATTERING IN PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY
By K. A. Stacey, Ph.D., Chester Beatty Research Institute.
A survey of the theory and applications of light scattering to the study of macro-molecules, with an exhaustive treatment of the apparatus and experimental methods in use. Price 40s.
SPECTROSCOPY AT RADIO AND MICROWAVE FREQUENCIES
By D. J, E. Ingram, M. A., D.PhiL, University of Southampton, w
Research in the subject has now developed stifficiently for the publication of this general outline for those who wish to apply the techniques in their own field of study or to obtain a broad picture of its methods and applications.
Considerable space is given to the design of experimental apparatus for those who wish to set up such spectroscopes, and in considering the applications of the technique a balance is preserved between fundamental and applied research. The theory is given for each of the three main branches of the subject and while detailed mathematical treatment is avoided, this is illustrated at some length by reference to the various experimental results. Price 45s.

In normal biological systems, we know that ionization plays a vital part in all metabolic processes. There is less direct evidence, however, about the part played by excited states in biological reactions, except in the cases where a chain of events is actually initiated by exciting radiation as in the case of the phenomena of vision or photosynthesis. A great deal of indirect evidence, however, suggests that many biological reactions are brought about by a true excited-state mechanism.
Without impinging on the area of "classical" photochemistry, the object of this book is to outline some of the more important physical concepts concerning molecular excitation and interaction, and to apply them to a number of chemical and biochemical situations.
The publishers will be glad to send you from time to time descriptive leaflets of the new books which they publish. If you would like to receive these leaflets, please send your name and address, mentioning your special interest, to
