EXCHANGES is the second level of MAIN COURSE ENGLISH. It is for pre-intermediate students of English. EXCHANGES follows on from ENCOUNTERS in providing students with English relevant to their present and future communicative needs while at the same time providing a thorough grounding in basic language skills. EXCHANGES Part A ends with a test, marking the half-way stage in the MAIN COURSE ENGLISH programme.
Like ENCOUNTERS, the language syllabus in EXCHANGES is both structural and functional. The course is organised in units, each containing five lessons followed by a Language Study section. The fifth lesson of each unit concentrates on the development of reading, writing and oral communication skills. Special attention is paid throughout the course to listening practice and the texts for this are given at the back of the book. The emphasis in the lessons is on understanding and ¦using English in a realistic way: the Language Study provides further work in which the emphasis is on understanding and practising the structures and forms of English.
The Teachers' Books contain all the students' lessons pages in a slightly reduced form, with step-by-step teaching notes alongside for clear and easy reference. The teaching notes contain the answers to the Language Study exercises and test as well as many suggestions for extending and adapting the material to the needs of different learners. There is a methodological introduction giving full details of the techniques introduced in EXCHANGES.
The recorded materials, available on open-reel tape or cassette, are optional. They contain the lesson dialogues, listening passages, language work based on the Language Study sections, and a collection of songs.
