Cruising on the surface enroute to New York City after fleet exercises, the Lancerfish is rammed by an outward-bound freighter 160 miles offshore and goes down in 1235 feet of water.

Unlike the ill-fated Thresher or Scorpion, she is at a depth less than her hull crush limit: most of her compartments are unflooded; her crew is entombed but alive. Although contact is made with the submarine via underwater telephone, the Navy can not get the trapped men out with the rescue chamber immediately available.
Thus begins a harrowing ordeal both for the men and officers in the doomed sub and for those in charge of the rescue mission on the surface who are racing against the clock and the deteriorating conditions below. Also, there are important figures in Washington who would sacrifice the men of the Lancerfish for reasons of Cold War politics.
Human courage, ingenuity, and seamanship are at a premium in this novel of naval adventure which compares favorably with the best recent writing of the sea by Nicholas Monsarrat, Alistair Mac-Lean, and Edward Beach.
THE AUTHOR
David Lavallee, a former submariner and naval officer, is also a professional diver and underwater technician. He has been a member of scientific expeditions to both the arctic and antarctic for sub-ice explorations. This is his first novel. He lives with his wife in Princeton, New Jersey.
