The author describes this short növel as "a purely fanciful tale, a little nightmare produced by the unaccustomed high living of a brief visit to Hollywood/' He has anticipated "ructions," for two reasons: first, from somé a protest at its unseemly preoccupation with the cadaver, and secondly, from American readers in particular, indignation at what they may regard as unflattering portraits of fellow countrymen. Evelyn Waugh is not a humorist in the ordinary sense, rather he is a satirist in the tradition of Swift and Donne. Lurking at the center of the növel are the immense motives of love and death, our most felt experiences, and receding away from the central theme are ranged dualisms of humorous contrast, the Megalo Stúdiós and the British Cricket Club, the pets and the loved ones, and the two cemeteries named the Happier Hunting , Ground and Whispering Glades.
