Walter Pater
Essays on Literature and Art
Edited with an introduction by Jennifer Uglow
Walter Pater was a major influence on the aesthetic movement and writing of the 'Nineties. This book gathers together a unique selection of his literary criticism, including several essays in their original periodical form and containing statements which have been edited out of the later published versions. The collection includes the studies of Wordsworth and Measure for Measure, and the well-known essay ' Style'; also material not easily found elsewhere, such as 'Aesthetic Poetry' and the important original version of 'Coleridge'.

The collection of essays spans Pater's literary career. The opening sections follow the growth of his views on... Tovább

The emphasis throughout is on Pater as a man of letters rather than as a philosopher; the introduction traces the events of his life and the development of his critical thought, noting the influence upon his work of past and contemporary critics. The collection of essays spans Pater's literary career. The opening sections follow the growth of his views on culture, aesthetic theory and critical method, while the final section of literary criticism proceeds from the early essays to the influential works of the middle period and the revealing criticism of his contemporaries in his later work. A short section of explanatory notes follow, which indicate also the divergence in the text between the original periodical and later published versions of certain works.
The jacket illustration is taken from a lithograph by Sir William Rothenstein and is reproduced by courtesy of the artist's executors, Sir John Rothenstein and Mr Michael Rothenstein Vissza
