ESSAYS IN ZEN BUDDHISM
First Series
BY D. T. SUZUKI
"Zen in its essence is the art of seeing into the nature of one's own being, and it points the way from bondage to freedom," writes D. T. Suzuki in his introductory essay to this important and seminal work.
No one is more responsible for the increasing interest in Zen in the West than Dr. Suzuki. In fact, until 1927, when he published the first volume of his Essays in Zen Buddhism, the Western world had little knowledge of this unique school of spiritual development which uses many systems of philosophy, psychology, and ethics in its own technique for self-understanding and self-enlightenment.

D. T. Suzuki, unquestionably one of the world's leading authorities on Zen Buddhism, was born in Japan in 1870 and received his training as a Buddhist disciple at the great Zen monastery at Kamakura. He is the author of more than a hundred works on the subjects of Zen and Buddhism in both Japanese and English, including his well-known compilation of Zen Buddhism's original sources Manual of Zen Buddhism (an Evergreen Book).
