He gave a valedictory interview to one of his favorite reporters,
Vernon Scott, of the Los Angeles Herald Express in September. He
told Scott, "I've squandered seven million dollars. I'm going to have
to sell the Zaca. I need the money, old bean. But don't grieve for me
when I go. The way of a transgressor is not as hard as they claim. I
suppose 1 11 be criticized, but it s a question of living life the way you
see fit, and I've been careless of other people s opinions. I never
thought the public would be interested in my so-called antics.
"Years ago it was a matter of choosing which road to travel. After
all, there is only one road to hell, and there weren't any signposts

"I've lived hard, spent hard and behaved as I damn well chose.
You'd think I'd be ready for the wheelchair after the last twenty
years of hell raising, but I never felt better."
A gallant statement of his philosophy, followed by a gallant lie to
conclude it.

THE UNTOLD STORY
BY CHARLES HIGHAM
THE UNTOLD STORY
BY CHARLES HIGNAM
"Errol Flynn could have been tried for
treason. The world-famous star could have
ended his life on the hangman's noose."
In this astonishing statement, best-
selling author Charles Higham sums up a
theme of his major new biography of the
superstar. Behind the fame, the magical
movie career that made Flynn a symbol of
heroism and partriotic adventure, there
was hidden a horrifying secret: he was a spy
for the Gestapo, working in harness with a
leading SS man, Dr. Hermann F. Erben.
Aided by the FBI, army and navy intelli-
gence, and the State Department, Charles
Higham has woven a spellbinding story of
espionage and doublecross. He shows the
industry coverup that hid Flynn's activities
from an unsuspecting public. And the au-
dacious maneuver by which Flynn used
Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt's friendship and
trust as an unwitting cover for his treason-
able mission.
Along with this amazing story, the book
discloses Flynn's previously unrevealed
sexual encounters with Howard Hughes
and Tyrone Power, both of whom were also
bisexual; and his one-night stand in New
York with Truman Capote.
(continued from front flap )
Higham discusses Flynn s activities as in-
ternational criminal; compulsive thief;
committer of manslaughter; smuggler of
gold, guns, and drugs.
We see Flynn as a man in constant
danger. While the career soared in such
classics as The Adventures of Robin Hood,
Captain Blood and Gentlemen Jim, the
macho star was threatened by exposure,
ruin, and execution. This undercurrent of
supsense makes Errol Flynn: The Untold
Story a true-life thriller—which comes to
an unforgettable climax in the scavenger-
filled streets of postwar Shanghai.
Charles Higham is the author of the best
seller Kate: The Life of Katherine
Hepburn; Marlene: The Life of Marlene
Dietrich; and well-known books about
Orson Welles, Cecil B. De Mille, Florenz
Ziegfeld, and Ava Gardner. Formerly Re-
gents Professor of Film and Literature,
University of California, Santa Cruz, he has
been a contributor to the Sunday New York
Times since 1970. He received the French
literary prize, Prix des Créateurs, in 1978. Vissza
