Chrimes, The Law Quarterly Review "In considering the various words and images that came to stand for permanent institutions, Kantorowicz discusses the phrases 'head and crown' and 'realm and crown,' which appeared in various medieval documents. What, he asks, can 'crown' mean in these phrases? His solution is that the king's head and the geographical realm are purely physical phenomena, and that the word 'Crown,' when added, indicated the political metaphysis in which both rex and regnum shared, or the body politic (to which both belonged) in its sovereign rights. The separating of the crown from its physical reality and turning it into a term of political theology is a typical episode in the story Kantorowicz telis. . . .
