On November 12, 1984, astronaut Joseph P. Allen made history by retrieving from space the malfunctioning Indonesian Palapa B-2 satellite and returning it to the space shuttle Discovery. For the first time, a satelhte was snared in space and returned to earth for repairs and eventual redeployment.
