English for Medical Students

This book is intended to help medical and pre-medical students who are planning to study medicine in English. It is assumed that they will have some knowledge of general English, but little experience of studying works in scientific English.
Passages have been selected from a variety of standard medical textbooks and reproduced in their original form. In the first part of the book simplified versions precede the actual passages so that the reader proceeds from a familiar kind of English to a less familiar kind. Notes following the passages draw attention to characteristic but unfamiliar features of the kind of scientific English used in medical texts, and exercises provide opportunities for the student to check his understanding of both vocabulary and structure. There are also pronunciation practice lists, and a short dictionary to give the student help in reference skills.

There are already several books available which are designed to help overseas doctors improve their skills in spoken English in order to be able to conduct their day-to-day clinical practice, but little attention has been paid to developing reading skills in the field of medicine. This book aims to meet this need, and will be valuable to tutors wishing to balance the spoken component of their courses with a reading component.
Clive Brasnett is a British Council ACE (Aid to Commonwealth English) officer in Kenya, and curriculum development specialist at the Kenya Institute of Education. He has been involved in teaching English and developing iEnglish teaching programmes in North Africa, the Middle East, India and Malaysia. His particular concern has been with the problems facing overseas students who need to use English for learning and communication in the fields of science and technology.
He is the author of English for Engineers (Methuen Educational, 1968) which met high acclaim from both press and practising teachers.
