ENGLISH BY OBJECTIVES was conceived, experimented on and developed at the CEEL (Centre tor the experimentation and evaluation of language learning techniques) in Geneva. The learning techniques used are a direct application of the principles of teleology, the Science of orientation towards pre-determined goals. The aims are practical rather than academic : the learner must acquire an active, usable knowledge of the language in as short a time as possible. The teaching matériái, therefore, has been oriented towards the learner's objectives, as has the entire system of teaching techniques used. The course covers a complete rangé from beginner to a level sufficient fór advanced study, or fór work requirements in English-speaking countries. It consists of a preliminary phase, giving 25 hours study, and four main phases, giving from 75 to 100 hours study each.
