Endothelium-Dependent Hyperpolarizations Edited by Paul M. Vanhoutte The existence of endothelium-dependent hyperpolarization and endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor was firmly established during 1995 at an international symposium held near Paris, Francé. This further volume reinforces the concept that EDHF, as opposed to nitric oxidé (NO), is of particular importance in smaller blood vessels and, in addition, underlines the multiplicity of other factors involved. Many candidate mediators are discussed, including somé new, sometimes surprising ones. The actions of EDHF on vascular smooth muscle cells are detailed, almost down to the molecular level. Further chapters enlarge our knowledge of the physiological and pathological roles of endothelium-dependent hyperpolarizations. The book concludes with reports on the still limited but crucialknowledge of the contribution of EDHF in humán blood vessels in health and disease. Endothelium-Dependent Hyperpolarizations will be of... Tovább

Endothelium-Dependent Hyperpolarizations will be of interest not only to physiologists and pharmacólogists, puzzling over the complexity of interactions between the endothelium and the underlying smooth muscle cells, but alsó clinical researchers and physicians treating patients with cardiovascular diseases. Indeed understanding the nature and role of EDHF appears to be crucial in the quest fjgr improved treatments for hypertension and other vascular disorders. About the Editor Paul M. Vanhoutte obtained his M.D. from the University of Ghent, Belgium and later completed a Ph D. at the University of Antwerp. He has been Professor of Physiology and Pharmacology at the Mayo Medical School, USA; he was later Professor of Medicine, Pharmacology and Physiology, and Director of the Center of Experimentál Therapeutics at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, USA. Since 1992 he has been Vice-President for Research at the Institut de Recherches Internationales Servier, Francé. Professor Vanhoutte has püblished over 400 originál research papers and contributed to and edited many books in the cardiovascular area. Alsó available from Harwood Academic Publishers: Endothelium-Derived Hyperpolarizing Factor (1996) edited by PM. Vanhoutte "EDHF is one of today s leading problems ancl / am glad to see this re a Ily up-to-date book" Professor R. Wegmann, Cellular ancl Molecular Biology Journal Vissza
