THIS VOLUME On the function of tlie male reproductive system, edited by David W. Hamilton and Roy O. Creep, is the fifth in the Section Endocrinology of the Handbook of Physiology. The twenty-five chapters provide an analysis of the biology of the mammalian male reproductive tract, beginning with the testis and proceeding through the epididymis to the accessory organs of reproduction. Thorough analyses are made of the process of spermatogenesis, the factors that influence it, and the mechanisms by which it is controlled. The interrelationships between Sertoli cells and developing germ cells and the role of the blood-testis barrier are discussed in detail. The posttesticular maturation of sperm is considered both from the point of view of inherent changes that take place in sperm in the epididymis and of the epididymal and extra-epididymal influences that control the matura-tional changes. Detailed discussions are given of the process of steroidogenesis and of the metabolic... Tovább

The posttesticular maturation of sperm is considered both from the point of view of inherent changes that take place in sperm in the epididymis and of the epididymal and extra-epididymal influences that control the matura-tional changes. Detailed discussions are given of the process of steroidogenesis and of the metabolic interrelationships at the target tissue level that reflect the mechanisms by which hormones exert their influences in the male.
This volume will serve not only as an excellent introduction into the field, but as a reference source for those already actively involved in research on the male reproductive system.
The subject index of this volume of the Handbook was prepared by Constantine J. Gillespie, of the National Institutes of Health Library, Bethesda, Maryland.
