VOLUME III, Thyroid, of the American Physiological Society's Handbook of Physiology section on endocrinology is designed to present an overview of current basic information about the thyroid gland. Although the primary orientation is toward thyroid physiology, clinical aspects of thyroid disease are elaborated whenever they are pertinent to the development of concepts about physiological processes in the gland.
The organization of topics and chapters is designed to enhance the volume's usefulness to the interested novice as well as the expert looking for specific background information. Chapters are grouped under the following headings: Developmental and Anatomical Aspects, Thyroid Metabolism, Extra-thyroidal Metabolism of lodoamino Acids and Related Compounds, Factors Influencing Thyroid Function, and Actions of Thyroid Hormones.
