Since the first edition oi Encyclopaedia of Chess Openings, C in 1974, substantial changes have occurred in the theory of both the French Defence and Open Games. This is reflected in the great increase in size of this volume and the seven new authors who have been added to the already formidable list of contributing Grandmasters. In addition, the material from the previous volume has been carefully checked and revised with particular care being taken with assessments.
Prepared under the auspices of the World Chess Federation, the series continues to use the now universal figurine algebraic notation and FIDE system of opening classification.
