MARK HELPRIN is the author of A Dove of the East and Other Stories and Refiner's Fire, a novel. Most of his stories have appeared in The New Yorker. Mr. Helprin was born in 1947 and holds degrees from Harvard College and Harvard's Center for Middle Eastern Studies. He has seen service in the British Merchant Navy, the Israeli Infantry, and the Israeli Air Force.
