In its last period as an independent city state, Venice was the scene of a magnificent flowering of art. In the 18th century, during the gay, playful Rococo period, there were seven theatres in the town of lagoons, whose repertories included the plays of Goldoni and Gozzi. The great names in music were Vivaldi and Scarlatti, and it was a golden age for painting. The colours of the Venetian masters became known throughout Europe. Sebastiano Ricci's ethereal delicate colourf radiate joy, and in the decorativs pictures of the greatest painter oe the period, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, lemon-yellow and skyblue dominate by an iridescent shimmer of all the colours of the rainbow; the vedute of the two Canalettos and the two Guardis evoke brilliant feasts and the mysterious and fabulous regions of the Republic.
