Foreword
The Guide to Confusable Words is one of a sériés of Cobuild English Guides to particular areas of difficulty for learners of English.
This Guide deals with words which may be confused. This may be because they look or sound similar, or because they have similar, but not identical, meanings. In some cases there may also be a différence in the grammar of the words. Often there are misleading similarities between words in English and words in other languages.
This book contains nearly 400 entries, covering over 900 items. Using real examples, the entries show the typical use of the words in modem English. The examples are taken from the Bank of English, a collection of modem English speech and writing drawn from a variety of sources. The computer files of the Bank of English currently contain approximately 200 million words.
