Edvard Munch was a key figure in the development of painting in the twentieth century and an influential precursor to the expressionist movement in Europe. Now best-known as the artist behind one of the most iconic and recognised images in the world. The Scream 1893, during Munch's lifetime the themes of desolation and despair behind his work resonated with those experiencing the new modern age but also caused controversy and drew much criticism.
