In 1769, Father Jüan Crespi, member of an expedition to found missions along the Californian coast, proclaimed the settlement of El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora La Reina de los Angeles to be founded. The settlement boomed as the land was found to be fertile and the climate equable. The tiny pueblo has now become the bustling metropolis of Los Angeles, the third largest city in the United States of America. Perhaps the most important people to come to the growing city were a bunch of actors and speculators in search of constant sunshine. They found it and went on to found the most fantastic industry the world has ever seen: Hollywood. The sheer glamor of Hollywood has left its stamp on the area in a special way. The homes of Beverly Hills still stand as mute testimony to the wealth of the idols of the silver screen and Manns Chinese Theater still displays its concrete footprints of the famous in the sidewalk. But if the star system is gone, an offshoot of Hollywood is still very much alive. Behind this glamorous and fun loving exteriőr, Los Angeles is as serious a city as any other. It is an outstanding cultural and educational center, with sophisticated and attractive facilities for many popular pursuits, including sport. As host city for the Olympic Games in 1932 and again in 1984, the vibrant city of Los Angeles brings a new dimension to the event. The magnificent collection of color photographs and the informative text of this book bring the city alive and capture the peculiar atmosphere unique to Los Angeles. Vissza
