Tuberculosis strikes one person in the United States every ten minutes-kiiis one person every 60 minutes . . . startiing statistics in a day when much of the civilized world believes it is weil on the way toward conquering the disease. Tuberculosis strikes one person in the United States every ten minutes-kiiis one person every 60 minutes . . . startiing statistics in a day when much of the civilized world believes it is weil on the way toward conquering the disease. Fortunately these figures are considerably lower than a decade ago. Today childhood tuberculosis is not the widely destructive force it was at one time but in many areas its mortality and morbidity are still tragically high. The tuberculin test and antituberculosis drugs are the most effective tools in the eradication of tuberculosis in children. But technical knowledge alone of tests and drugs is not sufficient in the drive to prevent and cure tuberculosis. To properly care for and treat the patient, the physician must have complete understanding of the natural course and prognosis of the disease. It is for this purpose that this book has been written. Dr. Lincoln and Dr. Sewell have studied the natural course of tuberculosis in hundreds of children over a period of many years. Their aim in this book, the first work of its kind since the advent of chemotherapy, is to make their accumulated knowledge available to clinicians and others interested in tuberculosis control. As physicians deeply involved in the use of antimicrobial therapy, they are uniquely qualified to point out both its advantages and limitations. (Please see back flap) Vissza
