European Consortium for the Ceriificale of Altainmeni in Modern Laneuaees * Sample Tests 1-2 * Levels A-B
FOREWORD
Language is not merely a fundamental characteristic of human existence, but, since the curse of Babel, it has also been a source of division in mankind. In a world of globalization it is not only the privileged few who have the right or the opportunity to be proficient in foreign languages. There are more and more language learners, as everyday experience proves the importance of language proficiency in the field of economy or politics, in international relations, as well as in learning about the values of science and culture.
Europe has always been multi-lingual, and it is to remain so, too. Foreign language proficiency guarantees that languages and cultures may be mutually accessible. By having an appropriate level of foreign language proficiency, one has a better opportunity to build a professional career, to study abroad, to choose one's place of residence, and even spending one's holiday abroad may become more enjoyable through gaining a better understanding of the local culture. Language is an organic part of the speakers' identity and culture. Thus, learning languages is a means of getting to know other "possible worlds," as foreign language proficiency may contribute to overcoming intolerance and xenophobia.
Language learning is a long process requiring years of hard work and perseverance. It is like a challenge to reach the top of a high mountain, whose peak can be conquered with the best chance of success by inserting a few breaks in the climb. A language examination offers an opportunity to look back on the distance already covered—whether the exam is taken because of externa! pressure or as an internal requirement to complete and summarize the learning process.
This set of sample tests is intended to assist those preparing for various levels of the international ECL examination system. By taking the sample tests, would-be ECL examinees can measure their language proficiency before attempting the "live" exam.
This set of sample tests offers two tests for each level, following the sequence and format of the live exams. ECL exams measure reading comprehension, writing, and listening comprehension with two tasks each in the written part. In the course of the oral part, candidates—examined in pairs—are to face two assessed tasks: first they are to discuss a given topic, which is followed by the candidates' independent discussion of pictures. In this publication each set offers one sample "picture montage" along with possible supporting questions. The texts for the listening comprehension tests and the color version of the picture montages can be found on the CD enclosed. The answer keys, which can be found at the back of the tests, are meant to provide assistance in checking one's own answers.
Now we would like to give some advice on how to take the tests.
Whether you are preparing for level A or B, we suggest that you take all three sample tests so that you will be able to decide which level is the appropriate one for you.
Reading comprehension
Do the two tasks one after the other. Read through the texts and then read the instructions again in both cases, so that you may give accurate answers. Unless it is necessary, do not use full sentences; short, one or two-word-long, note-like answers are sufficient Study the example, which helps you understand how to answer the questions. Writing
Two pieces are to be written. Write the composition or letter using the bullet points provided. Keep to the word limit, and make sure you pay attention to the features of the letter format characteristic of the particular language. Listening comprehension
First you can hear the instructions on the recording, then the text is to be listened to twice. The short pauses between the texts are incorporated into the recording, so the CD need not be stopped, and the task can be completed in one go. Make sure you sUidy the example here as well.
We wish you success practising and good luck with your exam!
