Earth on Fire From the pyrotechnics of explosive Mount Etna in Sicily to the ravaged cone of Mount St Helens in the USA, volcanoes are the most awe-inspiring, fascinating and potentially devastating geological phenomena on earth. With spectacular aerial and close-up photographs by Bernhard Edmaier accompanied by clear, informative texts about key areas of volcanology from plate tectonics to pyroclastics, this book reveals how volcanic activity shapes the most dramatic and beautiful landscapes of our planet. Earth on Fire features an amazing rangé of geothermal formations, from hot flowing lava and towering columns of smoke and ash to lakes, islands and mountain ranges that are the result of volcanic activity. Divided into chapters by tectonic plate region, this book includes geothermal areas in Europe, the Americas, Africa, New Zealand, the Indián Ocean and the Caribbean.

Bernhard Edmaier is a photographer and geologist who has photographed the earth for over 15 years, focusing on places where its surface has been shaped by natural forces alone, without humán intervention. His knowledge of the structure of the earth and its geological development forms the basis of his work, and his aerial photographs have contributed greatly to our understanding of the planef s surface. His work is published regularly in magazines and exhibited internationally. His previous books for Phaidon include Earthsong (2004) and Patterns ofthe Earth (2007). Dr Angelika Jung-Hüttl is a geologist and writer who contributes to a number of different newspapers and popular scientific magazines. She has worked and travelled with Edmaier for more than ten years and has written several books on volcanoes, ice and glaciers. Vissza
