In his speech delivered on the eve of the Marian Congress in Rome in November 1954, Pope Pius XII warned his listeners of two dangers with regard to our attitude toward Mary: on the one hand of exaggeration, in theological study and the too energetic promotion of sentimental devotions; and on the other of behttlement of the Marian mystery through extreme rationalization. In Mary, Mother of the Redemption, Father Schille-beeckx has kept both cautions steadily in view.
Taking as his first premise that a true understanding of the mystery of Mary can be achieved only when it is allowed to develop, fully within the mystery of Christ, he proceeds to an examination of Mariology, not as a separate entity, but as forming, with Christology, a single organic whole.

He sees two truths at the heart of the Marian mystery: among redeemed mankind, the Mother of God is the most sublime human being and the first fruit of the Redemption; at the same time, she is the mother of all redeemed mankind, her sway extends over all those who are co-redeemed. His aim is to reduce these two truths to one single vision, in order to bring out as clearly as possible the organic unity between the various Marian mysteries and this single Mariological principle.
The study ranges from an examination of the scriptural data of Mariology, from both a theological and an exegetical point of view, to an exploration of the theological richness of such devotions as the Rosary. It is a book which should afford much comfort to the present-day Catholic bewildered by the immense quickening in scientific scriptural and theological studies which often seems to pose a threat to the life of prayer. With regard to biblical criticism he writes: "Where the facts of revelation are concerned, it is certainly not scriptural exegesis which has the final word to say, although it cannot be denied that recent biblical scholarship has made a very valuable contribution to the entire subject by throwing a fresh light upon the traditional view."
And with regard to theological criticism of popular devotion: "Theology lives in and draws its sustenance from the life of faith led by the members of the Church community, and theologians should realize that this life is more powerful than all the feeble efforts made by theology. . . . The function of theological criticism is to serve the living, objective and absolute truth and humbly to acknowledge that every part of the truth possessed by any individual human being has a relative value." This is the balance of the Catholic center. $3.95 Vissza
