Famous trials 6
This sixth volume in the Penguin Famous Trials series contains four cases, including that of John George Haigh, the Kensington mass-murderer.
The case of Thurtell and Hunt, although it was no more than a sordid murder for gain, evokes the days of the swindlers, sharpers, cut-purses, rogues, and gamblers who infested the more seamy quarters of society in the early nineteenth century. Frederick Nodder's case, on the other hand, set the pattern in 1937 for the modern 'nation-wide hunt' following the disappearance of a child or the discovery of its body-the kind of passionate search to which we are all too accustomed today.

Finally there is the case of John George Haigh. The abnormal personality of this callous murderer-his vanity, his social charm, his erratic intelligence-stamped... Tovább

Finally there is the case of John George Haigh. The abnormal personality of this callous murderer-his vanity, his social charm, his erratic intelligence-stamped itself unforgettably on the mind of the public in the late 1940s. This 'man-at-the-next-door-table', befriending rich old ladies in a Kensington hotel, provided a classic comment on the uprooted standards of post-war Britain. Vissza
