EDVARD MUNCH
by Jean Selz
The place of Edvard Munch in the history of painting has never been accurately defined, for the reason that his work does not belong to any given School. Most frequently it has been labeled Expressionist, but it can be integrated into Expressionism only in the capacity of a precursor of that movement. Actually the label has resulted from a disregard of the large part of his work that stands completely outside this designation. Munch has always been unknown in France, to the point that to date no French monograph has been written about him. Yet his work is profoundly original. When he began his artistic career, at the end of the nineteenth century, his associations with Parisian artistic circles brought him under the Impressionist and neo-Impressionist influence, but only for a very brief time. His personality quickly asserted itself in masterful canvases in which his tormented, disturbed mind, preyed upon by agonizing conflicts, contributed to the... Tovább

EDVARD MUNCH

His personality quickly asserted itself in masterful canvases in which his tormented, disturbed mind, preyed upon by agonizing conflicts, contributed to the formation of an aesthetics of anxiety which was at first, and superficially, viewed as simply an expression of his «Norwegian pessimism.» The fact is that we are dealing here with emotional characteristics peculiar to his individuality, and which were a source of both creativity and psychic problems. This book by Jean Selz, who is the author of some twenty books on art (including several monographs published in this same series) is thus one of the first about Edvard Munch to appear. In it the painter's life and work are analyzed in their aesthetic and psychological correlation. The most representative canvases of his realist. Expressionist, and post-Expressionist periods are studied and reproduced, together with a selection of his graphic works, which place the artist among the major engravers and lithographers of our century. This book casts a new light on one of the most unusual aspects of artistic creation. Vissza
