Steric EflFects in Conjugated Systems
The many important effects of steric influences on the properties of organic molecules attract very considerable attention at present, and The Chemical Society Symposium held in the University of Hull during July 15-17, 1958, constituted an endeavour to cover a specific but important aspect of this vast subject. The two main groups of papers covered steric effects in conjugated systems as studied by electronic absorption spectroscopy and kinetic methods. The ten papers treated the following topics— electronic energy levels and deformation in aromatic hydrocarbons, steric effects in diphenyls, in di- and tri-phenylmethane dyes, and in cyanine dyes, the classification of steric effects in u.v. absorption spectroscopy, the absorption spectra of carbonyl compounds, electronic spectra and chemical data, steric effects in solvolysis reactions and nucleophilic aromatic substitution, and the development of a Hammett type equation for ortho... Four other papers were read which served to illustrate the diversity of effect which steric influences may have. These contributions covered the effect of steric factors upon dipole moments, the reaction of protons with aromatic hydrocarbons, vapour phase chromatography, and the mesomorphic or liquid crystalline behaviour of compounds.
