To enter the world of African art is to enter a series of richly diverse and creative societies. From the glories of West African sculpture to Zulu power figures, the Christian-influenced art of Ethiopia and Muslim Sudan, the so-called Dark Continent has an amazing and impressive artistic heritage.
Only in this century, however, with the growing appreciation of non-Western artistic traditions, has African art, and above all African sculpture, come to be recognized as a major cultural phenomenon in its own right. Until their discovery by European artists such as Picasso and Matisse, the artifacts of the African kingdoms were regarded simply as colorful colonial trophies or museum curios. It was the monumental sculpture of the kingdom of Benin, above all the majestic bronze memorial heads, that was first hailed as mainstream rather than "primitive" art, and now takes its place alongside the work of the greatest Western artists in the world's auction rooms.
