Giving these data and formuláé which are often used, at an elementary level, in engineering courses, this book is intended to cover the needs of a f irst year undergraduate course, except that tables of mathematical functions, the thermodynamic properties of f luids, and the properties of structural sections, which are available in other publications, are not included. During the next few years, there will be a gradual change-over in the U.K. to the International System of units, known as the S.l. system. In electrical engineering, the S.l. system has already replaced the C.G.S. system and so electrical data are given only in S.l. units. In other branches of engineering, the British system of units, based on the foot, pound and second, is at present commonly used. Other data are therefore given in both systems of units, and an extensive list of conversion factors between the two systems has been included. This should be particularly valuable; for example, by saving the student the need for memorising numerical coefficients, provided that he then directs his efforts towards developing a full understanding of the topics listed.
