DONALD R. HANNAFORD and REVEL EDWARDS
Preface by DAVID GEBHARD
The authentic Spanish colonial houses were built for comfort and convenience. Their construction and ornamentation were of well worn and tried traditions of both Spanish and New England settlers, worked with local materials. The authentic Spanish colonial houses were built for comfort and convenience. Their construction and ornamentation were of well worn and tried traditions of both Spanish and New England settlers, worked with local materials. These qualities have proved their value for today's gracious living. This book gives architects, home builders, and historians authentic examples.
More than sixty years ago the authors, two young architects, were appalled by the continuing disappearance of the old Spanish colonial buildings in California. So they spent four years tracking them down, photographing, sketching and making measured drawings of them. Most of the buildings have since disappeared!
Architectural historians will value this book, first published in 1931 and out-of-print for more than fifty years. And for the home builder it is a practial workbook with a wealth of ideas in its 175 photographs and drawings, including 26 full pages of measured and detail drawings of interior and exterior doorways, paneling, balconies, wrought-iron, and mantels.
David Gebhard, of the Department of Art History, University of California at Santa Barbara, in his preface to this edition, states: "for practicing architects, Hannaford and Edwards' volume became the main published source, and remains so today, of photographs and drawings of the early adobes."
