REBELLIOUS PROPHET
A Life of Nicolai Berdyaev BY DONALD A. LOWRIE
The creative fire that illumined the per-sonality and thought of one of the twentieth century's universal men is re-kindled in this intimate, fully documented biography.
Berdyaev's tumultuous life, following a pattern made classic in Russian literature, is a fascinating story. Further, rebellious prophet is significant for the light it throws on the central issues of modern thought, portraying the events and con-tinuing challenge of the Russian Revo-lution as experienced and interpreted by a daring modern exponent of spiritual freedom.

Further, rebellious prophet is significant for the light it throws on the central issues of modern thought, portraying the events and con-tinuing challenge of the Russian Revo-lution as experienced and interpreted by a daring modern exponent of spiritual freedom.
Donald Lowrie, a friend and publishing associate of Berdyaev for many years, in-terviewed at length the philosopher's rel-atives and friends. His extensive research into the writings of and about Berdyaev uncovered much new material—includ-ing somé facts, especially about his ances-try, that Berdyaev himself did not know. One of the first to receive a visa to Russia after the recent cold war thaw, Dr. Lowrie gained entry into State Libraries in Mos-cow, Leningrád, and Kiev, where he dis-covered hundreds of Berdyaev items that have been carefully preserved even though

Berdyaev had been exiled during his life-time.
Thus the author is able to trace the un-broken development and growth of Berdyaev as a thinker. His integration of Berdyaev's writings with the happenings of his life permit the first complete and appreciative understanding of this re-markable philosopher. F. H. Heinemann,
in his EXISTENTIALISM AND THE MODERN
predicament (quoted on the front of this jacket), says that Berdyaev in his true catholicity, holds the key to a spirituaí and
religious unity of mankind.

Sámuel McCrae Cavert says of this book: The experience and thought of the Russian Orthodox philosopher who made one of the most creative contribu-tions to Christian scholarship in our time are surveyed magnificently by the American who knew him best. Dr. Lowrie's first-hand knowledge of Russia and the Russian tongue and his intimate association with Berdyaev in the émigré colony in Paris enable him to produce a definitive account of the man and his ideas, well documented by extensive research.
8 pages of photographs. Full bibliography and Index.
The author: Donald A. Lowrie was an associate of Berdyaev's for 24 years in Paris, where Berdyaev was Editor-in-Chief of the YMCA Press, the largest publish-ing house issuing books in Russian outside of the U.S.S.R. The author of four earlier books and a translator of somé of Berdyaev's works, Dr. Lowrie is chairman of the commission for a new Russian trans-lation of the New Testament.
