Equally, individual accounts are also given of the great directors from around the world - not only those lauded by the critics as auteurs, but also the honest journeymen who have contributed much to the pleasure of films without setting out to stamp their world view on them. Often more important than the directors, or even the stars, are the studios, also profiled here; established and run by ruthless ambitious men, each gave its films its own particular character.
Finally, no account of the movies world is complete without admitting that our idols have feet of clay. The book looks behind the myth of the stars at the sometimes squalid and even criminal activities of their private lives. These stories can be even more dramatic than those their screen personas took part in.
