Telecommunication transmission was one of the earliest fields to exploit digital techniques; the penetration of digital transmission into the telecommunication network is already significant, and its success has stimulated much work in important allied fields. As in any evolving dis-cipline, a great deal of early experience, and its documentation, has lost much of its relevance to the mainstream of subsequent development. It is now opportune, somé two decades after the first digital transmission system was put into service, to attempt to review the subject from a vantage point significantly improved by the experience now available of many working systems worldwide.

This book covers the essential theoretical, planning and practical aspects of the subject in a balanced way. Although primarily directed at a postgraduate level, much of the text should be comprehensible and useful to undergraduate students of telecommunication courses.
