Vienna 1900 as a "total work of art"
The Vienna Jugendstil attempted to cover all aspects of life by means of its concept of the "total work of art". Gustav Klimt, Kolo Moser and Josef Hoffmann, the main exponents of this style, are synonymous with Vienna Secessionist art around 1900.
The works created by Austrian artists at the beginning of the 20'^'' century have had a lasting influence on art. In this compact introduction to the topic and the period, Diethard Leopold, Franz Smola and Peter Weinhäupl present over 300 works, around 130 of them from the Leopold Collection: major Vienna Secessionist works as well as paintings and prints from the Expressionist period up to the end of World War I (Richard Gerstl, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka). Diethard Leopold: Born in Vienna in 1956, studied German, Theology and Psychology. Lecturer at universities in Austria and Japan, freelance psychotherapist, exhibition curator and kyudo (Japanese archery) trainer. He is the author of numerous books including: Wissenschaß, Psychologie und Zen — Eine interdisziplinäre Verfremdung, 1993; Rudolf Leopold — Kunstsammler, 2003; Shinto in der Kunst des Bogenschießens, 2009.
Franz Smola: Born in Passau, Germany, in 1963, studied Law and Art History in Vienna, International Relations in Bologna and Washington D.C., Curator of the Leopold Museum Collection; research specialisation: 20'*' century Austrian art.
Peter Weinhäupl: Born in Vöcklabruck/Upper Austria in 1962, studied Business Administration and Art History. Managing Director of the Leopold Museum Private Foundation. Member of the board of directors of ICOM-Osterreich (Austrian branch of the International Council of Museums). Initiated the reconstruction of Klimt's Faculty Paintings in the Great Hall of the University of Vienna as well as the presentation to the public of Gustav Klimt's last studio in Vienna, conceived the tour "Artist Trail - Klimt on the Attersee".
Rudolf Leopold: Born in Vienna, studied Medicine and Art History. Museological Director of the Leopold Museum Private Foundation. International appreciated expert on the work of Egon Schiele. Published a comprehensive catalogue raisonné of Schieles paintings in 1972. The Leopold Museum Foundation was launched in 1994 by Rudolf Leopold and the Republic of Austria, followed in 2001 by the opening of the Leopold Museum.
