THE COLLINS DICTIONARY OF QUOTATIONS, since its first publication in hardback, has established itself as an authoritative work of reference for public speakers, writers and crossword solvers, and also as an invaluable treasury for the browser and the lover of literature.
Very much a book for the 1980s, the coverage of the Dictionary ranges from Thucydides to Thatcher, from William Shakespeare to Woody Allen, taking in all the classics as well as the colourful and witty sayings of the twentieth century. The wit and wisdom, pithiness and poetry of over 1,300 authors provide a total of over 8,000 quotations, all arranged alphabetically by author.
The extensive index, a vitally important part of any dictionary of quotations, features both keywords and the phrases in which they occur, enabling the reader to find, for example, 37 quotations on the subject of youth, or 18 quotations concerning freedom.
As a reference work the Dictionary can be used to verify half-remembered quotations, or to give the source of common phrases or sayings whose origin has been forgotten. It can also be used — with the aid of the index — to suggest apposite quotations to suit any occasion, or simply to provide hours of entertaining browsing.
