Long used in England in its figurative sense, nest egg was originally applied to an egg or facsimile which was placed in the nest in order to attract the hen to lay eggs there. 1932 F. D. Roosevelt in Time 24 Oct. 15/2. It would be advisable for governments of all kinds to set up in times of prosperity what might be called a nest egg to be used for public works in times of depression. OFF YEAR. A year in which there is no presidential election, usually characterized by a scarcity both of issues and of voters. 1873 Garfield-Hinsdale Ltrs. 247. Almost one half is lost because it is the "off year" in politics- 1876 N. Y. Trib. 17 Oct. 4/2.
