I had been told to present myself at his office at 9.10 a.m., but where to lurk in the meantime? All potentially friendly offices were locked. I settled, feeling hunted, on the lavatory on the second floor where I paced up and down until discovered by a friendly face and forced to flee '
By 7.20 that evening Alasdair Milne was Director-General of the BBC.
Little more than five years later on 29th January 1987, following a normal Board of Governors meeting, Milne was asked to go and see Marmdduke Hussey, the Chairman, and Joel Bamett, his deputy. 'He wants me to go immediately - "It's a unanimous decision of the Board." I write my resignation and walk out of the BBC.'

If that was not enough the future of the BBC itself was urider scrutiny via the Peacock Committee, licence fee negotiations had to be battled through ari.d opportunities for satellite broadcasting considered.
