THE EDUCATION OF HISTORIANS IN THE UNITED STATES is based on information collected through questionnaires, visits to universities, interviews with both teachers and students, and research. It reports major trends in the field since the 1870s, describes contem-porary practices, makes criticisms and suggestions for change, considers recent experiments, and discusses prospects for the future.
This comprehensive report surveys the supply and demand for college and uni-versity history teachers; it analyzes the characteristics of contemporary graduate students in history and discusses the problems of recruiting. The book studies undergraduate éducation in history, training for the master's degree, Ph.D. training institutions (faculties and facilities), and the methods of doctoral éducation in history. It compares training in history with that in related disciplines. Approximately 90 per cent of all Pli.D.s in history become college teachers. Con-sequently, the book stresses the préparation of effective history teachers and the improvement and acceptance of the teaching function in conjunction with scholarly training. It points up the major problems confronting the history field today and coneludes with important rec-ommendations for the improvement of graduate éducation in history.
