The Hungarian minority in Romania is the largest national; minority in Europe. Its efforts to retain its ethnic identity are diametrically opposed to the Romanian government's campaign of forced assimilation. This report discusses cases of imprisonment, harassment and discrimination against members of the Hungarian minority; it also describes increasing limitations on the use of the Hungarian language and threats to the existence of Hungarian schools, churches, theaters, books and broadcasting.
News of the Romanian government's plan to eliminate roughly half of Romania's 13,123 villages, and to replace them with 558 agro-industrial centers, has given added urgency to the minority situation. Approximately 18,000 ethnic Hungarians fled to Hungary from Romania in 1988—the first time in recent East European history that refugees from one Warsaw Pact country have sought refuge in another.
