Fülszöveg

This book describes the design, implementation and performance of MU5, the fifth large computer system to be designed and built at the University of Manchester. It covers both hardware and software, since these have been designed as an integrated system by a closely knit group of'engineers' and 'programmers'.
Although the emphasis falls on the main design features of the system, the authors, who have both been deeply involved with the project since its inception, have also included a wealth of detail relating to current hardware and software techniques and to the practicalities of hardware/software engineering.
The book begins by considering the order code of MU5 from the point of view of its use and implementation, where the prime aim was to achieve efficient processing of high-level language programs in both batch and interactive modes. There then follows detailed discussion of the hardware, ranging from the technology used to the logical implementation of the architectural... Tovább

The book begins by considering the order code of MU5 from the point of view of its use and implementation, where the prime aim was to achieve efficient processing of high-level language programs in both batch and interactive modes. There then follows detailed discussion of the hardware, ranging from the technology used to the logical implementation of the architectural features of the system and the organisation of the store hierarchy. On the software side the book deals with the user's view of the system, the structure of the compilers and operating system, and the techniques used in their implementation. In the final chapter there is a thorough discussion of the performance of the system in relation not only to the original design objectives, but also to other commercially available systems.
Both authors have been on the teaching staff of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Manchester from the first years of its existence. Derrick Morris, who is Professor of Computer Programming, has been publishing papers mainly in the system software field since 1960. Roland Ibbett, a senior lecturer, has worked and published in the computer system design field since 1966. Both authors have had close links with the computer industry and Dr Ibbett has been a Visiting Associate Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh. Vissza
