DELHI
AGRA • FATEHPUR SIKRI Martin Hurlimann
Today the capital of one of the leading uncommitted nations in the world, Delhi has long been a centre of poli' tics and government. And indeed the 'Seven Cities of Delhi', as they are called, contain palaces, mosques, mausolea and other monuments of immense artistic importance which form a pageant of the history of Cen^ tral and Northern India through the ages. Here are Ashoka's Pillar with its curious inscriptions, the Red Fort containing the old Palace, the shrines, the bazaars, the people. As famous in its way as Delhi itself is Agra, the city of the Taj Mahal. Here too is a magnificent Fort on the River Jumna, and a history of plunder, oc/ cupation and desertion. Fifteen miles away is the city of Fatehpur Sikri, which was founded by Akbar in the i6th century.
Dr Hurlimann has recorded these fatv tastically beautiful monuments in a selection of the many photographs that he took during his visits to India in 1958, 1963 and 1964. He introduces them with a long essay on the history and art of these three cities from their beginnings to the present day.
