DELACKOIX
'You might have called him a volcanic crater artistically concealed behind bouquets of flowers', wrote Baudelaire of Delacroix, the cultured dandy who rarely betrayed the intensity which lurked below the surface, except in his art. He explored the use of colour and light in a way which aided the experiments of the Impressionists and later abstract painters. He pioneered a more musical concept of painting, deriving from the inner consciousness, which was also of great interest to those who came after him. What impressed them most, though, was not the harmony of his painting but its tremendous excitement and vitality. This speaks to us today. Vissza
