These are early poems of Dylan Thomas, and when first published W. J. Turner enthusiastically welcomed them, saying that their creator had shown himself 'that magical thing, a true poet-original and traditional, imperfect but outstanding, with the tinmistakable fire and power of genius'. Walter Allen, already familiar with the new figure in his literary world, discovered in them 'a new mai-uriLy', and wiiii 'his use of language and his imagery as striking and felicitous as ever', thought he had attained 'a mastery of intricate metrical forms'.
There was of course a stream of praise for the new poet who had arisen to give poetry a new turn of expression—but the volume is above all remarkable for what G. W. Stonier had to say with a fine insight: 'Three at least of the poems in this volume— "A Winter's Tale", "Poem in October" and "The Ballad of the Two-legged Bait"—must be placed among the outstanding poems written in our...
