Once upon a time the Earth was a little younger and greener and much more mysterious. As the long nights drew in all over the world the folk would gather round the flickering flames of their fires and as the winds howled outside and the rain beat against the walls they would teli tales. The stories they recounted did not come from books because the words had yet to be written down-in those days even paper had not been invented. These tales had been told to the old folk when they were young and as people wandered from village to village the stories spread. Even so, what was very strange was that the same stories cropped up in opposite corners of the world. Many of the tales were fiiled with magic and enchantment-for these were times when wizards still lurked beyond the hills, witches cast evil spells, adventure awaited in the nearest wood, young handsome princes fought giants and dragons to rescue beautiful princesses imprisoned in deep dungeons or high towers, and when animals talked and fairies waved their wands. Where and when did these stories begin? Nobody knows and yet their truth, wisdom and magic stirred the minds of the young who, in their turn, retold them to their children. Many, many years later they at last came to be set down on paper and printed.in books. Here, then, as fresh and new as when they were first told, are fairy tales from lands near and far. As you read, discover for yourself the enchantment that lives on. Vissza
